Design competitions have been gaining popularity recently, being seen by companies as a low-cost way to get design work done. The general idea is that a company advertises a competition where a number of designers are invited to submit finished designs (usually logos) and the company chooses one that they will use. The ‘prize’ varies – it can be money or exposure/publicity.
Increasingly, designers are deciding against this kind of speculative (or spec, for short) work, on the grounds that it is bad for both designers and clients alike.
